Trivia

AUSTRALIA is huge!  It is the sixth largest country in the world. It's about the same size as the 48 mainland states of the USA and 50 per cent larger than Europe, but has the lowest population density in the world - only two people per square kilometre.

It comprises of an area of approximately 8 million square kms; it covers a distance of 3700 kilometres from North to South, and 4000 kilometres from East to West. Within these boundaries there is an extraordinary range of flora and fauna, a variety of climatic extremes and a host of geological wonders. Temperatures vary from an average of 30 degrees Celsius in the midsummer of the Red Centre to an average of 6 degrees in the highlands in winter.

There's much to learn about Australia. Endless miles of unspoilt beaches, tropical rainforest, mountain ranges and vast tracts of desert make Australia a country of contrast.

Preparation before you leave...

Planning your trip....
Firstly, prepare a list of things that you need to bring with you on your holiday and check it thoroughly before leaving home.

Leaving your passport, credit cards or licence at home would be a disastrous start to your holiday!  We strongly recommend you obtain personal health and general travel insurance before you depart for Australia.

A good book on touring Australia will help you get the most out of your trip. It will tell you about tourist destinations, what to expect when you get there, accommodation, and places to eat and just about everything else. There are dozens of books and web sites out there but I recommend the Australia Motorcycle Atlas from Hema Maps.

This road atlas has 100 top rides throughout Australia and each of these rides has a full page devoted to it at the start of the book. Each ride is described with respect to what to see and all the features and each ride is referenced back to the totally revised Road Atlas.  It is spiral bound with a plastic sleeve for protection and easy viewing.

Bikescape also has this atlas available for purchase for AU$29.95 each.

Luggage on a bike
The more gear you pack, the heavier the bike will be, increasing the difficulty to handle – consider carefully exactly what you will require and only pack that.  The bigger touring bikes often include panniers, and the medium bikes have racks on the back that can have either your own bag or one of our purpose built bike bags attached to.

A small rucksack for everyday items is useful so that you don't have to keep unpacking everything to get at your camera for example. Cargo net type bungees are good and you'll need at least a couple of standard ones.

Make sure you pack dry clothing in waterproof plastic bags because there is nothing worse than wet clothes! - a good tip is to pack each days clothing into a individual plastic bag.

Clothing and footwear for bikes
Australia is often hot but it can also be very cold and wet. On a bike you need to cater for these situations. Touring is no fun when you're cold and wet and you're much more likely to make mistakes. A good pair of biking gloves is essential as is an armored jacket.  Bikescape have these items available when you collect your rental bike.

Leather trousers are useful if you are spending any length of time in the southern part of Australia as the weather can be variable especially if you climb in altitude. That means you'll need warm clothes too.

Bike boots are the most appropriate riding apparel, but when you're trying to save space and weight a good pair of walking boots will serve you on the bike and off it.

Spending Christmas at the beach or skiing in August may seem strange but Australia's seasons are the opposite of the northern hemisphere - summer officially starts in December and winter in June. But even in winter you'll enjoy blue skies and warm, bright days.

Australia's climate and the fact that it is the driest continent on earth makes it a fabulous holiday destination all year round, whatever you're planning to do. In the Australian winter you can ski in the southern states one day and be diving in the balmy waters of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland the next. Such temperate conditions make al fresco dining, sublime days on the beach or the water, outdoor barbeques, and a huge variety of sports a way of life here. No wonder Aussies believe life is for living!

Aussie Speak!
  • G’day is hullo, pronounced Gidday which is a shortened form of Good Day, and used mostly in informal situations. More formally we would say Hullo, Good Morning, Good Afternoon, or the likes.

  • Goodbye is, um, er, Goodbye. Although some people say Hooroo, pronounced ‘ooroo.

  • Bloke is an Aussie male who generally is a hard worker and does the right thing. Eg., "Bill’s a Good Bloke".

  • Mate is Friend, mainly for males. Everyone in Australia is mate, so we would often say "G’day mate" or "Thanks mate".

  • Onya means Well Done, a shortened form of Good On You. The best "Aussieism" in my opinion.

  • Sheila a common term for an Australia female, usually single and probably good looking. It probably originated from the high number of female immigrants from Ireland called Sheelagh.
